Mujina into the Deep

Terumi Morgan bitterly accepts that he shouldn’t expect a lot from life. He just wants to meet his deadlines at work and watch his porn in peace. But then an unexpected sick day sends him on a collision course with two people who will change his world forever—a runaway kid and a thirtysomething mujina assassin. Suddenly life is expecting a lot from him.

Ubume used to be one of the best assassins in Tokyo, but now that she’s 30, life is starting to catch up with her. After getting gravely wounded by an upstart influencer in what should have been a standard battle, she’s prepared for the worst. But instead of getting an undignified death, Ubume somehow ends up in possession of a teenage girl, a really nice place to crash, and a major grump of a roommate with a secret weakness for found family. Her reputation as a mujina might be in tatters, but she knows how to fix that—at swordpoint.

Rooftop culture might seem cool when you’re just watching clips on social media, but trying to live without your human rights is way worse than any dead-end job. You can’t rent an apartment, go to the clubs, or get any kind of legit employment. The only way to make it as a mujina is to get into the assassin biz, and that all but guarantees you an imminent expiration date. But with badasses like Ubume and Tenko to look up to as shining examples of mujina success, will Juno decide to give up her rights to get out of the daily grind?

There are two main rules for being an assassin, and Ubume has always followed them well—don’t let emotions get in the way, and don’t lose. But ever since she got caught up in Juno and Terumi’s weird little found family, she’s felt herself slipping. Maybe she’s not cut out to be a soulless killing machine anymore. Maybe it’s time for her to take her soul back.
