Xin’s journey begins when his friend Piao, another war orphan who imparts to Xin the same dream of becoming the Greatest Generals Under the Heavens, is offered a position in court in the capital. He leaves Xin behind to train on his own, and to meet him there one day. One fateful night, Piao returns bloodied and on the brink of death, with his dying words being for Xin to go meet a boy who turns out to look exactly like Piao. But this is no ordinary boy—it’s the king of Qin, Ying Zheng! And assassins are hot on his tail!

After safely meeting with Lord Changwen and soldiers still loyal to the rightful king, Ying Zheng and his company must decide on the next steps to reclaiming his throne. Meanwhile, Xin and Diao are completely out of their element around these soldiers and advisors, many of whom are confused and shocked by their presence. But seeing Diao gives Lord Changwen an idea on where to start their quest—meet with the Mountain King. But it won’t be easy, as their treaties lapsed hundreds of years prior, and outsiders are not welcome.

Ying Zheng, the King of Qin, who is seeking to regain his throne after a coup orchestrated by his half brother, successfully rekindles an old alliance with the King of the Mountain. Now backed by Xin, Diao, the soldiers who stayed loyal to Zheng, and the Mountain People’s warriors, the mission to retake the capital of Xianyang begins!

Ying Zheng’s surprise attack to reclaim the throne has begun. While he and a number of his own men, along with the Mountain People, keep attention on themselves at the steps of the palace, the real attack is underway, with Xin leading a separate force of Diao, Bi, a few Qin soldiers, and more Mountain People through an escape tunnel with a direct route to the throne room. Their goal? Put an end to Cheng Jiao and remove him from the throne while the main force acts as a distraction. But Cheng Jiao is prepared and not going down without a fight, and soon Xin’s team is met with monstrous foes!

With Cheng Jiao’s coup put to rest and Ying Zheng back on the throne, life soon returns to almost normal for Xin and Diao. Having declared his goal of uniting the seven kingdoms under one leader, Ying Zheng commences his conquest, and Xin finally gets his opportunity to fight on a real battlefield, rise in the ranks, and become one of the Greatest Generals Under the Heavens! His first step is starting out as a foot soldier in a war against the Kingdom of Wei. But he quickly learns just what it means to be a mere foot soldier on the front lines against one of the Middle Kingdom’s most terrifying armies.

Xin and his small five-man unit of Qin infantry soldiers are finally in the thick of battle. Death surrounds these lowest-ranked fighters who are being used as cannon fodder against the kingdom of Wei’s heavily armed soldiers. Things go from dangerous to terrifying, however, when the kingdom of Wei’s infamous war chariots bear down on them.
