The battle with the Dread Viscount rages on—but so does the siege of Breda! When Issak comes into possession of a new cannon meant to relieve the siege, he knows he must not let it fall into enemy hands, but he and his friends can’t protect the gun. Issak, Heinrich, and the others attempt a daring escape as the fortress of Heusden crumbles around them. But the Viscount is not going to let them flee without a fight! When they finally emerge from the battle, what awaits is a reunion with old friends—and the last stage of Issak’s long quest for vengeance. He discovers that Lorenzo is in the city of Saint-Malo, a haven for pirates and smugglers nestled along the French coast. To reach the city will not be easy, and even if he does, he’ll have to face Lorenzo’s army: his arch-nemesis has trained Saint-Malo’s women as sharpshooters, and every last one of them will be looking out for Issak!

As things go awry on their trip to Saint-Malo, Issak and his companions find themselves traveling by foot across France. When an old adversary emerges as a possible ally, Issak will have to decide whom he can trust. Not long after, he and Henri discover a detachment of the French army with the same destination as them, but Issak fails to convince the army that they’re walking into a deadly trap. Now he must rush the rest of the way to the port city if he’s to save the French from their awful fate…and the city from Lorenzo!
